II. The Predictions of the Prophets and the Congruence of Their Lives and Teachings

Once the Hebrew people had settled in their own homeland with their religious, social, and political institutions well established, the Israelite people were in danger of deviating from the way of faith they had embarked upon when they left Egypt. They risked savoring their temporal prize without appreciating the supernatural and eternal one, thus reducing religious life to external cult without interior conversion and separating daily life from faith in God and the covenant with him. Further, living according to faith in Yahweh proved difficult at times; it required going against the current. It meant not giving way to the idolatry of neighboring peoples. The Chosen People also had to overcome continuous temptations to break the strict commandments of the law.16

To help the Israelites overcome these challenges, God sent his prophets. They preached the truth and kindness of the faith of Yahweh and sought to motivate the people to serve their most holy and jealous God, who only desired their good in commanding them to observe the law. The credentials of these holy men were the congruence of their daily lives of sacrifice and the demanding nature of their teachings in conformity with the law. Some of the prophets were also able to prophesize future events.17
