Twenty-Seven

Nika taps my arm and gestures forward. We army crawl closer to where the boat came to shore, noise from our movements masked by the river.

Hosea pulls the rowboat up the riverbank.

I blow out a breath, and then Nika and I get up.

Hosea spins toward us and pulls his gun.

“Just us,” Nika says, hands raised.

He lowers his weapon. “You two are quiet. Impressive.” He looks behind us. “Where’re the others?”

“Catching some rest,” Nika says. “We thought you’d be gone longer.”

He nods toward the boat, which seems bigger, staring at it straight on. “Found Catori pretty fast. And she was mighty fine with settin’ out soon.”

“Who else is on there?” I ask.

“Some of her crew. I’ll introduce ya’ll in a few hours. You can’t start traveling at this time of night, and Catori’s still waiting on word about certain supplies. Some sleep is a good idea for now.” He climbs up the bank to us.

“You didn’t mention her crew,” I hedge.

“Just two of ‘em. Davey and Nate. Brothers.” He shakes his head. “They’re a bit much, but reliable. And trustworthy. They’ll have your back, no matter what.”

We go back to camp, and Nika and I lay down. I remove my lenses and stare up into the limbs of the evergreen trees. A light breeze stirs them, diffusing their scent through the air. As much as I’ve wished there was someone to lead us forward, a part of me is finding it difficult to trust anyone else to keep us safe.

But Hosea hasn’t given us any reason not to trust him, and if he trusts Catori and her crew, they must be decent people.

Right?
