CHAPTER SIX

I had to leave a message on Malcolm’s phone. It was a work day and he was likely out doing Sheriffy work. Like a normal person. I was the one on vacation, sleuthing.

But, by heaven, why was he not answering my call?? I needed him.

Emma finally emerged, after I’d gotten through the rest of the footage of Trudy and Elias. Then, they switched to some other episode in Peru, and I was off again. I could leave the videos knowing I’d found at least what I needed to find.

I made a note of Maggie’s channel name and gave the keys to Emma.

While we drove into town, Emma turned on the radio and I started looking through the videos on Maggie’s channel to find anything else that had Alberta in the notes. Nothing.

Then, I went back to Elias’s Facebook page. I found the post where he changed the name to EliasandMaggie. Three years before the Banff video. A year into the no-talking-between-parents-and-children in the Dietrich family.

I found the posts where he talked about his brother’s husband, and went back from there. Every time I would find a post and then keep scrolling, Emma would glance at me like I was a crazy person, but I couldn’t stop, and I didn’t want to talk about it.

I went back to the earliest mention of his brother’s husband. It was almost a decade ago. Long before the break. And his mother was tagged on it.

That wasn’t the problem.

It also didn’t appear that the Maggie relationship had coincided with the family split.

As best I could, I tried to find the posts where it would have been right around that time period. Roughly a year before the wedding. But he hadn’t met Maggie yet. They met and got married quickly. Within a month, according to the dates on his travel logs.

Yes. I am a massive snoop. Sue me.

It gets the job done.

Emma called out that we’d made it to the Sheriff’s Office. I looked up and shook my head. It felt like no time had passed at all, and yet I felt so immersed in the Dietrich family drama, it was pretty amazing. It’s scary how much you can learn about people when their settings are public.

Thank God for public social media pages, though.

I wouldn’t be able to solve crime without them.

Emma and I walked into the RCMP station together and as soon as we came in to the big room with all the desks, Cortland Cable locked onto us like a blood hound. It was pretty amazing to see. He beelined toward us with a kind smile on his face.

“You look like you’re feeling better,” he said to Emma as he put his hand on her lower back. I saw her stiffen at first, and then relax into the gesture. He was the uber protective type, and she definitely had a thing for that kind of guy. He was playing his cards right so far.

“I am. Thank you.” She pushed her hair behind her ear and glanced up at him through hooded eyes.
