Sixty-Four

Compassion for Ivy Tulane pushed Derrick to work the case.

The fact that Tessa was stabbed, left in the snow, and the timing of her death had his instincts believing it was connected to the frozen body of Nadine Houser. And possibly to Ginger Weston’s disappearance and Bill Hubbard’s murder.

But he had to cover all the bases and that meant looking at Tessa’s case on an individual basis. It was possible that she’d had an enemy who’d killed her and wanted the police to think she’d been murdered by the same killer as Nadine Houser.

Except there were differences. Nadine’s body had been stored for years. Tessa had been discarded as if he was in a hurry to leave her, as if she meant nothing to him.

Perhaps Nadine was the source of his infatuation, a personal connection.

Derrick stepped into Tessa’s childhood room, noting that the room lacked frills. Instead, posters of storybook characters and supernatural creatures occupied a bulletin board. Another corkboard held handmade sketches of characters which were part of Tessa’s zombie series.

He found a laptop on the white wicker desk along with a sketchpad and a folder of photographs of different areas of the country with unique landmarks, rock formations, and eerie names. There were cuttings and notes about odd sightings of paranormal creatures, of haunted towns and supernatural beings. There were others of folklore about werewolves, vampires and demons. Another of the levels of hell described in Dante’s Inferno.

Inside the desk, he found a folder of fan mail, so he decided to take it and her laptop for lab analysis.

The closet held a box of her clothing from when she was younger, then a few jeans, shirts, warm winter wear and a pair of boots. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Ms. Ivy was wiping at her eyes with a tissue and Ellie was soothing her with soft words of comfort when he came down the stairs. They both looked up when he entered the room.

He gestured toward the items in his hand. “May I take Tessa’s laptop and this folder with me? There might be something helpful here.”

Ms. Ivy sniffled into her tissue. “Yes, of course.”

He thanked her, and Ellie stood, saying, “Are you sure I can’t call someone?”

Ms. Ivy squeezed Ellie’s hand. “I’ll call Emily with the Porch Sitters. She’ll come and sit with me and pray a while.” Her hand fluttered to her chest. “And I’m sure Eula will come, too.”

Derrick had heard of the Porch Sitters, the local prayer group who gathered on porches to pray weekly and in times of need. He didn’t know how much he believed, but he hoped their prayers helped them find this killer and give Ms. Ivy comfort.

Ellie said people thought Eula Frampton communed with the dead. That the two women were friends.

He thought about those pictures of the supernatural sightings. Did Ms. Ivy
