Chapter Thirteen

I excused myself and went upstairs, saying that Spaz had just contacted me. Luna offered to come with me, but I waved her off, saying it was probably nothing. It was something, because he was calling me to the Enchanted Forest, but as far as the others were concerned, I let them think I was just making a phone call. Safer that way, since Luna would insist going in with me. But with a possible tracking spell on my ass, I didn’t want to put her in any danger.

Not that I would tell her that. She’d bite me, and not in a pleasant way.

Chivalry isn’t dead. It just went underground.

I decided to go to my laboratory/study where I would probably be left alone for a while. As I walked in, I looked hard at the bookshelves, monitors, workbench, and the permanent casting circle I had in the floor. I had thought about having the Tiny House remodel the room, seeing as I didn’t need a circle anymore to do spells, but I still liked looking at it. I walked over to the circle and sat down in the middle. Maybe I didn’t need it to connect to the Enchanted Forest, but the circle was somewhat comforting. And right now, I could use a little comforting.

The revelation that I had more than just one brand of magic swirling around inside me wasn’t new, but I thought it had been just Dark Elf and Light Elf magic before I got my Muspelheim powers. Instead, I had a mishmash of Human, Jotun, Namer, and gods only knows what else magic. In retrospect, it was bound to happen, particularly in America, which had been a melting pot for different ethnicities in the past, and more recently, different races. In other words, someone was bound to end up with a mix of talents.

But I had other things to think about besides what magic I had. I sat in the middle of the circle and concentrated. The concentration part wasn’t really necessary because as soon as I closed my eyes, I passed through the Enchanted Forest’s portal. When I stepped through, I stared in surprise. I was in Spaz’s tea/coffee shop.

“Hey dude, we have a lot to talk about.” Spaz said as he set a mug of hot coffee on the counter.

Spaz had updated his coffee shop with oaken shelves of different coffee and tea blends. The whole shop had a homey feel with overstuffed leather couches and chairs arranged around oak coffee tables with smooth, antique-brass accents. On the rose-colored walls across from the shelves held modern, kitschy posters that you’d normally see in coffee shops, but instead of Normals, it had werewolves, vampires, zombies, and other nightmarish creatures. Drinking coffee or tea.

“So, what did you find?” I took a gulp of the coffee and reveled in the taste. The deliciously strong java tasted hot. “Wow, this is damn impressive.”

Spaz grinned, his perfectly white teeth contrasted against his dark skin. “Thanks, I’ve been tweaking the subroutines.
