Twenty-Eight
The Seekers emerged from their hibernation chambers, like wind-up toy soldiers being unwrapped from their freshly minted boxes.
Captain Shila took the lead and pointed toward the elevator. âLetâs get out of here!â
Javier stayed close to her while the Marines formed a ring around them with their weapons at the ready. They entered the elevator, and Shila waved the glove over the panel, taking them down to the bottom level. There, more Seeker soldiers marched from their chambers, forming a perfect queue into the corridors of the station.
The captain turned to Javier. âYou claimed the Seekers believed us non-threatening. I hope youâre right, Professor.â
âWhat are our orders?â the leader of the Marines asked.
âWe get back to our pod.â She directed everyone out of the elevator. âPut your rifles by your sides. Donât make any aggressive moves.â
The Marines looked at her as if her commands didnât compute. Regardless, they followed her instructions and walked out guarding her and Javier. Seekers swarmed the corridors ahead of them, seemingly with one thing on their minds.
Javier flinched as a pair of them brushed past his shoulder. The Seekers stopped and stared at him but quickly moved on. âTheyâre ignoring usâ¦â
âLetâs hope it stays that way.â Shila grabbed him by the arm to hurry him up.
Javier passed the viewing catwalk and glanced at the soldiers entering the weapon ship through the docking section. âTheyâre preparing for something.â
âThe question is, what?â
They continued their long trek back to the hangar deck, weaving through hordes of soldiers. At one point they passed by a weapons locker where a group of Seekers handed their compatriots their rifles.
The hangar deck was much busier than when theyâd arrived as Seekers deployed into the various transport pods. The Marines made a beeline for their own retrofitted vessel and got the captain and Javier on board as quickly as possible.
âBest speed out of here!â Shila barked at her pilot.
Lieutenant Nyman punched the shipâs engines, while everyone else strapped into their seats. The craft rose into the air, and he directed it through the exit aperture.
Javierâs heart pumped harder than it had for some time. When their vessel broke free, space appeared and he breathed a sigh of relief. They pushed at breakneck speed toward the Sabre, which thankfully was still there waiting for them.
For how much longer, no one knew.
