6.4 Common Use Cases for Virtualisation in HEP

6.4.1 Software Build and Test Systems

Virtual machines can host various operating systems (or several flavors of the same operating system) on a single physical machine and use them for building and testing software releases. Testing software releases in different environments helps to uncover bugs, and virtualisation technology in conjunction with continuous integration tools (e.g. Buildbot [4], Hudson[34], ETICS [37]) can facilitate the process of testing during the integration stage of the development cycle.
