Over the years, Thomason, who was consistently listed as a portrait painter in the city directories while he lived in Charlotte, undertook portraits of area businessmen, such as Joseph Benjamin (J. B.) Ivey (1864–1958), the founder of a chain of profitable and popular department stores scattered around the Southeast. Presumably, portrait commissions were a reliable source of income, and, whenever possible, Thomason chose to meet directly with the sitter to achieve a good likeness. In 1931, Thomason had railed against photographic portraits, citing their impermanence. “His pet animus is the hype of the ‘portrait’ painter who poses his subject before a hidden camera and makes his ‘painting’ from a cleverly synthesized canvas, on which the photograph is etched by a photographic process and colored over with paint.”38
