Headaches

Headaches are another of the most common problems seen by craniosacral therapists. In the following case studies, you’ll note that while the symptoms my clients presented with were similar, the causes of their headaches turned out to be very different.

Case Study: A Fall

Annabelle had recurring, debilitating headaches for most of her adult life. Medication dulled the pain but didn’t help completely, and it left her feeling unpleasantly sedated. She’d seen many specialists and tried several kinds of drugs and even steroid shots into the muscles of her head and neck. All tests and scans of her brain had come back normal, and she’d pretty much resigned herself to living with chronic pain when her sister recommended CST.

At our first session, I noticed that Annabelle’s CSR was diminished from her feet all the way to her ribs. Her sacrum, in particular, was barely moving at all. In contrast, the CSR in her head felt strained, with exaggerated motion. I asked if she had ever hurt her tailbone, and she replied that she hadn’t.

Given my assessment, I started work at her pelvis. After completing a fascial release at the pelvic diaphragm, I stabilized the bones of her low back with one hand and gently distracted her sacrum from her last lumbar vertebra, encouraging it to move toward her feet. After several minutes, heat began to release from Annabelle’s low back, and she suddenly remembered a time she had indeed fallen. Years ago, she’d been trying to skateboard during her first week of college, and the board had slipped out from under her feet. She landed on her bottom in the middle of the street, and while she’d been able to get right up and continue to ride, she was sore for weeks.

Her back was very restricted, so we worked here for quite a while. She commented how odd it was that she could be compressed in her back but feel pain only in her head. By the end of the session Annabelle was feeling giddy and relaxed, laughing about the fall. She reported only a slight reduction in her pain, but she was very interested in what she might remember next!

Annabelle’s next session was a few days later, and she reported that her headache had become very intense when she left my office, and the pain lasted most of the day. She went to bed feeling discouraged, but by the next morning her headache was greatly diminished. I reassessed her and noticed that she had a robust CSR throughout her body, with minor restrictions at her tailbone, at the back of her rib cage, and at many of the bones in her cranium. We quickly and systematically worked through those restrictions, and by the end of the session her pain was completely gone. She remains pain-free to this day.
