Handling the situation this way creates a successful outcome regardless of how well or poorly our children behave. If they make good decisions, they get to feel good about themselves. When we are forced to limit our children’s freedom because of their poor decisions, what approach will create the best result? Let’s consider three different parents handling this very same situation:

Parent A (with anger and sarcasm)

PARENT:

“For crying-out-loud! I try to give you a little bit of responsibility, and you can’t even handle it. What’s wrong with you? Why don’t you ever learn? That’s it! No more TV! I mean it!”
