This question becomes even more difficult to parse in juxtaposition with another from the same essay: “L’eau est vraiment l’élément transitoire. Il est la métamorphose ontologique essentielle entre le feu et la terre” [Water is truly a transitory element. It is the essential ontological metamorphosis between fire and earth]. If “l’eau véritable” is feminine, and at the same time “vraiment l’élément transitoire,” one must syllogistically conclude that the feminine is a transitory state between fire (as a metaphor for desire) and earth. Water becomes a metaphor for the extreme difficulty of reconciling desire with fantasy, as Díaz Rodríguez recognized. The task is made more difficult by the metamorphic nature of water, and hence, femininity.

Manuel Díaz Rodríguez believed that aesthetic sensibility and sexual arousal emanate from the same point in the body. In fact, the very hybridity of aesthetic experience—the music of painting, the colors of a symphonic arrangement—intensifies and enriches it.[48] Despite these orgasmic allusions, Díaz Rodríguez carefully differentiates the voluptuous from actual carnal union:

La voluptuosidad nada tiene de infame: es santa y triste, como fuente de amor, que es la suprema tristeza. Sin ella, el amor es imposible, porque sin ella es imposible la posesión. El espasmo grosero que nace de la unión brutal de los sexos, no es sino escoria de la voluptuosidad que nada tiene que hacer con el amor. [Voluptuousness is not vile: it is sacred and sad, as the fount of love, which is the supreme sadness. Without it, love is impossible, because without it possession is impossible. The uncouth spasm born of the brutal union of the sexes is nothing but the spume of voluptuousness which has nothing to do with making love. This is as far from vice as it is from unspoiled purity.][49]
