They were dressed in strange clothes – hooded cloaks and ragged shawls. They looked like the people in old fairy stories, except it would have to be the scariest fairy story ever because these people had grim faces and were shuffling, their eyes wide open like they were in a trance.

There was more screaming from the pupils, but the only way out was past the zombies and no one was going to do that. Everyone turned to Miss Miller, who looked like she was about to faint. She was just staring and staring as the shuffling figures got closer and closer to the school. The only person not jumping up and down and yelling was a girl in a silver hooded coat who stood with her back to Maya in the corridor.

The lights above the playground and car park suddenly went off again, causing yet more screaming. The shuffling figures could only now be seen by the light from inside the school and only then because they were so close.

Then the indoor lights started to flicker. Before anyone could move or scream, the figures burst into the building and all the lights went out.

“Miss Miller!” yelled Maya.
