Chapter Eight
The next morning, after weâd fed the horses, I had a quick breakfast with Hilary and her family, and then waved them goodbye as they went off to take Hilary to her rehearsals and do some errands for themselves in town. I could have gone, of course, but Iâd jumped at the chance to be able to spend the day with the horses instead.
Once the car was out of sight I flopped down on the sitting room couch, excited to be alone in such a fantastic place. This room had become my favourite. It didnât have a view of the ocean, but there was a window seat that looked out into a small, sculpted garden, and the inside walls were lined with hundreds of books. It had a quiet, safe, homey feel that made me want to spend all day in there curled up reading.
It was still early enough that the builders hadnât started their daily round of hammering and shouting yet. It was perfectly quiet, like the inside of an art gallery.
I pulled out a book at random and sat down with a satisfied sigh to read, but it wasnât long before I sat up again, too restless to sit around; I wanted to explore.
The Ahlbergs had told me I was free to poke wherever I wanted, and so I walked quietly through the guest wing of the house, opening doors and peeking in at the rooms that had already been renovated. There were ten bedrooms in all in this wing plus the four on the other side of the house. Plus, there was the nice sitting room that was for guests and the big living room that was just for Hilaryâs family. The big restaurant kitchen I knew very well since we ate there every day, but there was another, smaller kitchen on the Ahlbergâs side of the house, and a solarium with stone benches and an empty pond that was still waiting to be filled with plants and fish.
I grabbed myself a snack of leftover pie and looked at the clock on the kitchen wall. I still had time before I had to do paddocks and meet Rob for a ride. I had just enough time to go and explore the beach. Weâd passed by it on our rides, of course, but I hadnât gotten to explore the rocky area near the dock yet. It looked like it would be a perfect place to find some tide pools.
Slipping on my boots, I hiked down the hill to the ocean, inhaling deeply as the salty breeze whipped around my face, buffeting my clothes and pulling my hair in all directions. Today, the ever-changing ocean was dark and knee-high waves crashed against the shore. Gulls cried overhead, turning in large circles, their eyes trained downward to the sea.
I climbed carefully up onto a pile of rocks that had been carved into latticed geometric designs by a hundred years of salty water running across it. As I suspected, a
