Chapter Seven

Darby had gotten so used to the nervous pit of energy that now lived in her stomach, she actually felt as though she’d eaten a seven-course meal. Not that she’d ever once in her life eaten that much food, but she could imagine the bloated pressure that seemed to make her limbs tingle would be exactly how that would feel. Maybe that was something she could do with Ingo – eat a meal with his favorite food until she was stuffed.

Shit, she didn’t even know if cyborgs ate food.

There were very few things that she’d taken pleasure in back on Earth, but taking the time to enjoy a meal – no matter how humble it might have been – was something she’d tried to do whenever possible. It was in those moments of rest she’d take the time to think, to dream, to look to the stars and wonder who or what might be out there. She’d sit on the roof of the factory, eating her protein pack and tell stories with some of the other workers who’d come up with her.

I wonder if Ingo would sit with me and stare at the stars?

Her gaze snapped to Ingo’s back as they walked the distance between the shuttle they’d taken from the medical facility, to the elevator that led to the underground prison. Aerin had given her a small data pad with some basic information about the prison and what she could expect once they got there. It was a maximum-security facility that housed some of the worst criminals in this sector of space. The irony that she’d left Earth for fear of being arrested and sent to jail for what she’d done, only to come to an alien planet to live in a prison, wasn’t lost on her.

It was fucking mental.

Ingo stepped into the elevator and held out his arm, directing her to join him. “Zee will be waiting for us once we arrive on the main level. He will need to scan you and have your bio signs entered into the prison’s AI system so you’re not seen as a threat or escaped prisoner.”

“That would be a bad thing.”

Ingo snorted. “You’d be vaporized by the defense grid the first time you were alone in the corridor.”

Darby shuddered. “Yup, a bad thing.”

“As long as you listen to myself and Zee, you’ll be fine.”

She had no doubt that she’d be able to stay safe, but her concern was in lacking any sort of freedom for herself. She hadn’t come all this way to simply exist as an underground creature. Darby needed sunlight, fresh air, being outside even if it was only for a short period of time. There had to be a way that they’d have a semblance of a normal life, while not putting anyone in danger.

Had to be.

For the time being, Darby would follow the rules and do what needed to be done. She wasn’t willing to put Ingo’s or anyone else’s life in danger, just so she could go for a walk.
