CHAPTER 7 The First Epic Failure
MAYA SAT IN FRONT, THEN Frankie, then Ravi. After a long afternoon of building the day before, only the base of their sled was finished, but Frankie thought they should test it. Ravi wore a pair of ski goggles. Frankie thought these were totally unnecessary. She knew it was best to test the sled in a low-stress situation first, so they were starting off on the baby hill at the park.
Unfortunately, Lila, Suki, and Lauren had had the same idea. Just as Frankie and her team had arrived, Lila’s team had cruised by on their sled. Their sled looked like a square version of the bobsleds from the Olympics that Frankie had seen on the Internet. Frankie figured the girls had taken their refrigerator box and cut out a hole in the top for them to get through, then covered it all in brightly colored tape, like a rainbow. The sled wasn’t very original, but it worked, and it went fast. As they’d whooshed by, their hair had shot back behind them.
Now Lila and the others were waiting at the bottom for Frankie, Maya, and Ravi to go. It felt to Frankie like the whole world was watching. “Ready?” she asked. “One, two, three!”
The three friends used their hands to start their sled. Down, down, down… splat!
The sled dropped down and they stopped moving. They hadn’t gone even three feet.
Frankie jumped out of their sled. Their runners had collapsed!
“Oh no!” she cried. “This is the worst thing that could’ve happened!”
