The other man had run up the stairs. Now, he was running around upstairs and shouting and kicking in the bedroom doors, checking to see if the rooms were empty.
The man holding Julie pushed her into the kitchen, and she nearly fell over.
Elle winced, knowing that Julie was pregnant. âLeave her alone, you animals!â shouted Elle. She had now found an inner strength.
âShut the fuck up and sit down, the pair of you. Where is that Lambrianu bitch?â
Julie had been right. For whatever reason, they wanted Francesca. The men had strong Irish accents. Julie presumed they had put two and two together and decided it was Tony who had killed Paddy. This was payback time.
The other man came running downstairs and into the kitchen. Instantly, he recognised Julie. âWell, well, what do we have here, Itâs Julie Gold. I thought you had left earlier.â Youâre that Ralph Goldâs bitch.
âI forgot something and came back for it.â Julie was trying to think on her feet. Hopefully, it would only be a matter of time before Ralph and the boys turned up. She was afraid but remained defiant. She had a pager that would raise the alarm for the chauffeur all set up in her pocket. All she had to do was press the button, but she decided to wait.
It was obvious to Julie these two were novices. They were all bravado, and she thought they seemed just as frightened as she felt, now things had gone wrong, and the house wasnât empty.
âTwo birds with one stone here.â The second intruder raised his balaclava slightly and started laughing at his friend. âThis will show them bastards that we mean business and not to mess with us.â He grabbed hold of Julie, who was sitting down as ordered now. Taking a long piece of rope out of his pocket, he started tying her to the chair.
Julie had her hand in her pocket and pressed the alarm button on her pager before her hands were tied up. Now the chauffeur would know she needed him. A tea towel was shoved into her mouth, and her hands were tied behind the back of the chair. Julie looked up at the clock on the wall, wondering just how long she could play for time. She could smell the alcohol on the manâs breath as he tied her up. This was Dutch courage.
The other one shouted that the âLambrianuâs bitchâ, should be home by now. Again, this confirmed Julieâs suspicions. They had been watching the house, possibly for some time.
âWhat about her?â One of the men pointed at Elle. He walked over and slapped her across the face. âYouâre the housekeeper, and Iâve seen you before. Where is the safe and all of the money? Where does he keep all the money?â
âForget her, Mick. Sheâs nothing,â said the other one. He looked over to Elle. âKeep quiet, Grandma, and we might just let you live. Make trouble, and you will regret it. Heâs right, though. Money, we want money!â
Julie decided this was the way to bide time.
