NATURAL INCENSE
For thousands of years fragrant flowers, plants and herbs have been used as incense. The word incense is derived from the Latin words incendere meaning âto burnâ and incensus meaning âto cause a passion or an emotionâ. Using smoke to send prayers to gods or messages to loved ones is one of the oldest forms of ceremony and a powerful ritual.
Lighting natural incense also connects us to the elements. Requiring fire to ignite and oxygen to burn, by consciously striking a match and lighting the botanicals, there is an immediate connection to the air and earth, often evoking a positive mental state which goes far beyond the physical embodiment of its scent. This is why incense is often used in meditation to help cleanse the mind of distractions and to help focus.
This project shows you how to make your own loose incense using a blend of herbs, flowers and berries, most of which you can grow yourself, find outdoors in the wild or purchase.
