Chapter Nineteen

IT’S BEEN THREE days since I got the flowers and note from Parker. Fox and Slim let me know we’re all on lockdown and there are more men stationed outside to prevent anyone from getting on the compound who doesn’t belong here. Grim and Bailey left so they’re not stuck here. They had a group of their guys meet them closer to our clubhouse so there was less likely to have anything happen to them after being here. I’ve never been so happy to get a call from anyone in my life as I was when Bailey let me know they made it home without anything happening.

I haven’t been working. Sam has been handling the new clients as they come in because I have no energy to work. My mind isn’t on it and I refuse to turn in shitty work to authors. I’ve been reading, watching movies with the girls, and just hanging out in our room. We spent yesterday vegging all day and eating junk food. I was so stuffed I’m surprised I didn’t end up in a food coma. However, I’m not going to bitch because my friends and family got my mind off things and made me laugh. I laughed too hard a few times and almost fell off the bed more than once. Sam did fall off the bed once.

Fox has been staying close to the room and not leaving to head out and search for Parker. Something has happened, but no one’s filling me in on what that is. It has to have something to do specifically with my man though because he’s more withdrawn than ever and grumpy as hell. He grunts more than he speaks and ignores almost everyone most of the time. Unless it’s one of the kids because they have no understanding of what’s going on so we’re not going to take anything out on them. Our feelings don’t factor in when it comes to them.

Today, I want to plan a surprise for Fox. Not only for everything he’s given me, but because he’s a man I love, and I want him to know how much he means to me. He doesn’t know I found out when his birthday is with the help of Slim. It’s his day today and I can’t get out to get him a present. I can, however, have a special dinner with him and make tonight all about him.

For some reason, Fox doesn’t like his birthday. He hasn’t shared anything with me other than saying it’s just another day to him. Yeah, he turns another year older, but that’s about it. None of the men really make a big deal out of birthdays unless it’s for their ol’ lady or the children. However, I know the other ol’ ladies also know when they’re men were born. I’ve never known until I went snooping. Yes, I fully admit I snooped until I found it. I really don’t feel bad about it either.

Pulling out my phone, I let the girls know he’s not in our room so it’s safe for them to come in.
