13 RIDING THE TIME MACHINE

“This isn’t so bad,” my sister said.

“I agree,” Rebecca replied. “It’s actually kind of peaceful.”

Those two sat directly across from little Ricky and me.

Soon enough though, the tunnel swallowed up all of the light.

“Okay,” I heard Miss Penny nervously say. “Things just got a little spookier.”

She was right. Even though we weren’t moving very fast, the dark was complete. Making it even freakier was that there was a constant hissing noise coming from all around us. Was there some reptile in the tunnel with us?

Then I felt the mist blowing over my bare skin.

Miss Penny yelped.

“Ohhh that’s cooooold!” Perry shivered.

I figured out what the hissing noise was. Uncle Victor had some kind of small water tubes built into the slide’s track, and they were spitting that ice-cold water onto us.

I shivered, remaining quiet. My sister was right. It wasn’t too awful bad…

… yet.

The raft gently banked, and I sensed we were rounding a bend.

The raft banked again, and then again, and then again. Each time gradually picking up a head of steam.

With as much winding as we were doing, it was easy to envision that this part of The Time Machine must have resembled a moving serpent. The twists and turns kept coming, and the raft kept gaining momentum. At the point when I thought the bends would never end, the raft performed the sharpest turn yet. Up ahead, the slightest bit of light indicated the tunnel’s exit.

I swear on my life that when the raft went around that first tunnel’s last turn, the raft rode halfway up the wall! I triple-checked my safety belt.

At the very start of The Time Machine, the water floating the raft hadn’t been moving all that quickly. Instead, I’d say it was more of a trickle, and I hadn’t even really been able to hear it. Now though, the volume had increased, and in my mind I pictured it being more of a stream.

“It’s still not too bad!” my sister yelled.

Yeah, okay, that was true, but I could hear the water up ahead rushing. Is this where we went over the waterfall drop?

As we exited the tunnel, I glanced over the side of the raft and saw why the water began to rush. Water gushed out of two, large PVC pipes.

The raft tipped, tipped some more.

We clutched onto the center wheel, not to make the raft spin, but rather for a sense of security.

The slide pitched us downwards, but at least the slide's track stayed beneath us. We raced along, water spitting out and also at us from all angles.

We gripped the center turning wheel with all of our might, again trying to prevent it from spinning so madly, but it was a losing battle. Bunching my muscles against the unseen force, did no good. Even Perry’s arm muscles flexed to the max, veins popping out at his neck. We still couldn’t stop the raft from spinning crazily.

Yeah, Perry was flexed to the max, but he also looked to be having the time of his life.
