Chapter Fifteen

A couple of weeks later, I sat at a table in the commissary, eating a slice of pepperoni pizza and munching some fries. I’d been thrilled to see the fare amid all the other “alien” foods usually served, and slipped them onto my tray.

Celia and Soja joined me, my bestie eyeing my plate. “Are you sure that’s healthy to eat?”

“It’s fine.” And delicious. I waved her off. “I’ll burn it off in my hand-to-hand combat class.” My face heated as memories of Xan’s strong body pinning me to the mat bloomed in my brain. Gods, he was soooo hot.

“Hi, Zoe.”

My little fantasy interrupted, I lifted my gaze. “Jinx.” Wow. What the heck was she doing here? I glanced around, searching for the rest of her brood.

“Don’t worry,” she assured me. “I told my sisters I was going on a food run. They were more than happy to let me go, so they didn’t have to.”

Celia snorted. “What are you doing here, Jinx?” Suspicion filled her question.

“I, um…” Feathers visibly ruffled, she ran a hand over her orange crest as her gaze darted among the three of us.

“Spit it out, Jinx.” Yes, she’d appeared to have taken my side in a lot of Jillus’ schemes and straight-up meanness. She’d even apologized to me. But I didn’t want to risk an altercation with her sisters if I could avoid it.

Her focus landed on me. “You’re taking Hyperspace Geometry, correct?”

“Yeeeeeessss.”

“I am not doing well in that class. And I was, um, hoping—”

“You’ve got to be kidding.” Celia slapped her hand on the table. “You’re seriously going to ask her to tutor you after all the trouble you’ve caused her? Being so mean just because she was different?”

“Yes.” Soja slapped the table, too. “And mean to me as well.”

Jinx’s eyes popped wide. “I-I’m so sorry about that. I’ve tried to talk to Jillus about it, but she won’t listen.” She rounded on me, her eyes pleading as she reached toward me. “You know I’m not like her. I just really need your—”

Her hand knocked my cup, and coffee filled my tray. And, drat it, ruined my pizza and fries. And they’d been so tasty, too.

A high chirping squawk split the air. “I am so sorry!” She grabbed a pile of napkins and soaked up the disaster. More high-pitched chirps followed as she tried to fix an unfixable situation. “So sorry. Just so sorry.”

“It’s okay.” It wasn’t, but she really had been nicer to me.

“It is not.” A menacing quality rumbled in Soja’s voice. “It is not okay.”

I faced my sister. “It was an accident.”

She arched an eyebrow, fury swirling in her gray eyes.

“Seriously.” I set my hand on her arm in an attempt to calm her. “Everything is fine.”

Her eyes narrowed for a moment then her shoulders lowered a notch. Whew! I had one overprotective twin. But at the same time, I was glad to have her in my corner.

Soja swung her gaze toward Jinx. “You will make this”—she gestured toward the mess—“right.”

“Of course.
