18.3.4 Resistivity

The resistance of a component depends not only on the type of material from which it is made but also on the dimensions of the component. Resistivity is a property of the material alone and does not depend on its dimensions. For example, the resistances of copper wires of different lengths and cross-sectional areas differ but the resistivity of the copper from which they are made is the same (at the same temperature).

For a cylindrical wire of length l, cross-sectional area A and resistance R the resistivity is given by:
