Chapter 6

Phil sat up straighter and said, “The two who attacked you were CIA who’ve worked almost exclusively in South America, which is why they slipped through our security. We’ve often turned a blind eye to people who need a holiday as long as they’ve never actively worked in this region of the world. The one you shot died on the operating table but the other one survived. He was found dead in his hospital room this morning. Both agents who were in the room were also killed.

“The other three are SVR. Their story’s a bit farfetched, but so far it all checks out. They are part of a cell working in Argentina who also keep an eye on what the CIA is doing in the south. When the US team all packed up and caught a flight to Paris, they had people ready to report back what was happening. From Paris, they flew to Frankfurt and then bought tickets to Sydney. The SVR let the team in Argentina know what was happening, and they received orders to make their way to Australia and watch them. If they attempted a move on you, they were to be terminated.

“I know it sounds far fetched until one of them explained that the brotherhood made the decision, not the government. The SVR team had four members. I made a deal then contacted the other one. She confirmed the story and gave information on the remaining three members of the CIA team. We picked them up as they were boarding a flight to Melbourne. All that to say I think you should send a message to the Devil. If it checks out, we’ll let the SVR team go in the spirit of goodwill.”

BB said, “The Devil?”

“A Russian mobster Zen had some interactions with.”

“What Russian mobster? Why did I not hear of this?”

“Way to go, g-man. What was the CIA brief?”

“They did not have a capture option. They’d managed to get surveillance in place around the perimeter, but all of that failed to pick you up. One of them saw you get in an Uber near where they’re staked out and followed on instinct. Didn’t actually ID you positively until you got to the airport. The rest you know.”

BB was still staring at Zen, “What Russian mobster?”

“I arranged for some protection in New York. There was a bounty for my kidnap, which I did mention. In return for some information, one of the Russian Mafia bosses agreed to me being under-his-protection while in New York.”

“He is called the Devil?”

“No, he’s just a really bad man. Phil and Miriam aren’t happy I made the deal even though they agreed to it so I’d be safe.”

BB looked at Phil, and Miriam, then said, “Did he keep you safe?”

“Yes, he kept his word.”

“Then I have hope for this man. I will pray for him.”

Ed opened his mouth to speak, but BB raised her hand and said, “Not now, not here. We agreed I was free to make this decision, and you would respect that.
