Shakespeare stared at her, wide-eyed with astonishment.

“He’s very gentle,” Tim began, going red to the roots of his hair.

“He’s a Seeing Eye dog,” the flight attendant put in.

“He looks vicious. I was bitten when I was three by a dawg just like him,” she shrilled, her beady eyes glaring. “Besides, I’m allergic. I can’t eat bananas either. So there!”

Shakespeare was certain she was no such thing. He longed to mouth her elbow a little, but he checked himself for Tim’s sake.

“It is quite all right, madam,” the flight attendant said smoothly. “I have room for the gentleman and his beautiful dog in First Class.”

“I’ll move,” the lady began, starting to get up.

“No need,” the attendant said, smiling. “There will be more legroom there for Shakespeare. Come on, Timothy.”

“Shakespeare,” the woman echoed blankly. Nobody explained.

They got seated.

Keeping his rump firmly planted on the floor, Shakespeare shifted until he got a paw onto Tim’s knee. He gave the tense fingers a comforting lick.

“Down, Shakespeare,” Tim commanded.

Shakespeare jerked his offending paw down instantly and watched a smile tug at the corners of Tim’s mouth. Good. He had started on his life’s work.
