We’re on our lunch break and me and Charity sit together at a two-person table, eating our mediocre sandwiches and chips, which were included in the price of the seminar. Charity is wolfing down the food, dropping crumbs and stray pieces of ham straight into the canyon on her chest. As I sit and watch, I think about how much she confuses me. She goes to great lengths to look like a beautiful, classy lady, but then eats like a slob. She posts hundreds of pictures of herself on public forums, but then dismisses her fans when they introduce themselves. She might be bipolar. Everyone has some kind of affliction these days. Some are harder than others to deal with.

We sit in silence, and I leaf through the program we received when we first showed up. After lunch, it has the rest of the day marked off for a ‘motivational speech’ from Susan Leda. Her lecture is named ‘A Survivors Story: The Psychological Effects of Sexual Assault’. I don’t know why, but her name sounds familiar and I start to worry. I slide my phone out of my pocket with the intention of searching for her name, but Charity interrupts.

“So what did you think of that?”

“Of what?”

“The class. Harriett’s class.”

“It was fine. Just boring, I guess.”

“You really think it was fine?”

I don’t. My mind automatically slips into neutral. It’s my disposition, and no matter how many thoughts I have fighting to break their way out of my skull, I always go straight down the middle.

Charity looks down into her cleavage and wipes away the stray crumbs. Lucky bastards. She challenges my position.

“You’re so full of shit. What’s wrong with you, anyways? It’s like you’re scared of answering a straight question.”

She looks mad and disappointed and I don’t know why. Maybe she’s right. I take a minute and gather my thoughts, and channel Frankie Z’s cool demeanor. I breathe deep and draw on the words that are already in my head. I look at her beautiful face and the words come out.

“I think that stuff like this is the death of productivity. I could be at work right now, studying up on the butterfly that we’re supposed to be finding. I could be out in the field, actually searching or talking to survivors of the Blackfeet tribe who might know more about the legend. I could be back at school again learning some new skill that would let me get away from the same grind every day, which gives me just enough money to pay my bills and make sure I don’t starve to death. I could go buy a boat and sail around the world instead of sitting here for a full day to learn that rape is bad and that normal people ask politely if they can put their dick in someone before they do it.”

That wasn’t so hard. I feel happy with my response and Charity nods in agreement.

“Wow, you finally said something that doesn’t make you sound like a huge pussy.
