CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Where are we?” Lex asked from the back seat of the truck as Davis pulled into his grandparents’ driveway.

“Were at your great-grandparents’ house,” Heather began. His whole life she always told him the truth to his questions. She’d learnt early on that the more she told him, the less ‘why’ questions he’d ask. After she’d explained that to Davis, he’d started doing the same thing.

“You’re going to see Papa and Nana, Grandma and Grandpa, and Grandpa Pete,” Davis said as he helped Lex from his seat, and Heather gathered up the bags.

“Me do, DaDa,” Lex said as he went to jump from the back of the truck like he did his mother’s car. At the last second, Davis grabbed ahold of him and ended up gripping the back of his jacket so he wouldn’t faceplant on the pavement. Laughing, he twirled Lex around and the boy began giggling and laughing. Heather stared in shock before she giggled along with her son.

“Nice save, Dad.”

“Yeah, I thought so.” Davis grinned. “Does he always do that? Want to jump from the vehicle?”

“Yes.” Heather gathered up the diaper bag, her purse, and a container of toys for Lex, while Davis picked up the pies Heather had volunteered to bring. “Lex, sweetie,” Heather called her son, who had run toward the snowbank. “Would you go ahead of us and open the door for us?”

“’K,” he said, and ran toward the house.

“Good one,” Davis grinned as he brought up the rear. “Was wondering how we’d get him into the house with us.” Davis shook his head. He had never seen a child that wanted to be outside as much as Lex did. No matter the weather, he wanted to be out in it. With the new house, where their offer had been finally accepted, Lex would have the opportunity. There was a covered porch surrounding the whole house, and Heather said she’d be able to set up her work on a table in the back where she could keep an eye on Lex. The first thing Davis planned to do in the spring was erect a swing set for his son.

“I’M HERE!” Lex bellowed as he opened the back door to his great-grandparents’ home. The person closest to him was Grandpa Pete, Lex’s ninety year old great-great-grandfather.

“So you are,” he laughed, and held out his fisted hand to the little boy. They fist bumped, then as Pete started helping Lex out of his outer clothes, Heather and Davis entered. They only kicked off their shoes, removed their coats, then went toward the kitchen. Heather left the bucket of toys with Pete and Lex. Her last sight of them was the two of them going into the living room, and it was Pete who started playing with the toys, asking Lex all sorts of questions about the cars as he removed them one by one from the small toy bucket. Knowing their son was in good hands, they continued on.

In the kitchen, everyone looked up as they entered.
