“Max, are you up there?” Finn’s voice is like a cold shower, just as unwelcome and not remotely refreshing.

“Yep.” I groan, dragging my hand over my face, feeling the telltale heat in my cheeks. Her head appears and she hauls herself to sit with her legs dangling over the edge of the stack. Her smile couldn’t be any wider, and she looks like she’s had the weight of the world lifted from her narrow shoulders.

“You look flushed. Are you all right?” She places the back of her hand on my burning cheek and then forehead. I slap it away and narrow my eyes at her shit-eating grin.

“Just a dream.”

“I’ll bet, honestly, when are you going to wake up and smell the denial?”

“Good news, I take it?” I divert.

“Pink’s back and in love, and Buttercup seems really nice,” she gushes, clasping her hands together, her prayers answered. “She’s a vet and was being forced to marry a complete arsehole. Pink thought she had actually married him, but she was being held against her will. She escaped and drove all the way here.”

“Wow! That’s pretty dramatic.”

“I know. Nothing exciting ever happens around here, and bam! Full-on seat-of-the-pants stuff. Yesterday, he was devastated and today…” Her eyes glisten, and I pull her in for a side hug. She crumples a little, sucking back some relief-filled sobs.

“That’s great. I’m happy for you Finn.”

She wipes her nose with the back of her hand and tips her head, confusion clouding her joy. “You don’t seem happy.”

“Mixed news for me. I’m happy for you, but you won’t be needing me anymore, not now that Pink’s back and with a vet in tow no less.” It’s an effort trying to keep my tone light. My waning optimism is losing the battle with my pessimism.

Vigorously shaking her head, horror widens her eyes, and she’s effusive in her denial. “Oh, no. I don’t think that’s true. I’m sure Pink will want to keep you on, and there’s no way Tug and Toxic want you to leave. Besides, Buttercup and Pink have a lot to sort out, and they’re going back to Texas in a few days.”

“Really?”

“Oh not to live, just to see her grandfather and get her stuff. From what she’s said, she doesn’t want to live there, but she needs to make sure her grandfather is okay. And her clients, she doesn’t want to leave them without cover. Charge is going to go with them, and he’s taking his lawyer, just to be safe. Her ex’s family sound like a nightmare.”

“So they are going to live here?”

“Of course, but we’ll always have a place for you.” Her soft delivery fails to ease my bristling demeanor.

“I don’t see how, and I’m not a charity case.”

“God, I know that. Don’t say that.” She grabs my hand, pleading, and she looks mortified. Her expression is earnest, and I’m instantly regretting my snappy outburst. “Look, Max, honestly, I don’t know what’s going to happen, but can we at least let the dust settle
