ALEXIS

It’s well past midnight by the time I get a call from the front desk. Not that I was sleeping. Sleep is about the furthest thing from my mind. If anything, it would have been a blessing to fall asleep for a little while rather than sitting up, waiting, worrying. Watching mindless TV and absorbing none of it. Tyler came close to me before, more than once, but there’s something different about this. More sinister. They have touched my things, whoever they are, Tyler or one of his cronies. My clothes, my toiletries. This is an entirely different level of violation.

I jump on the phone like it’s a live grenade the second it jangles on the nightstand. The woman at the front desk, who probably never deals with the sort of drama I’ve brought around, says, “Miss Forrest, there’s a man down here who claims to be your boyfriend. His name is Mitch Dutton.” Clearly, a little burglary has made everyone more aware of the safety precautions around here.

My heart leaps and grateful tears well in my eyes. Not so fast, though. “Can I speak to him?” I ask, since who knows just how aware of my life these people are. They could use him against me, could be watching him, might have followed him to the airport. I hate how paranoid this is making me.

A moment later, a familiar voice reaches my ear. “Alexis? I’m here.”

“Tell them they can let you up,” I confirm in a shaky voice once emotion threatens to choke me. He’s here. Finally, he’s here. I can count on one hand the number of times I’ve longed for a man to protect me. This is one of those times. I’m not too proud to say I’m as shaken as I’ve ever felt tonight. My vulnerability has been laid bare in front of me and I realize now there are no rules. If someone is going around tying up loose ends, that means the rulebook is out the window… If there ever was one to begin with.

All of that is wiped away once a soft knock rings out against my door. Caution has me peer through the peephole to be on the safe side, and the sight of Mitch’s familiar and much missed face leaves me throwing the door open and gratefully accepting his tight hug.

“Thank you for coming,” I whisper against his shoulder, squeezing him for all I’m worth. “I don’t know what I would’ve done if you couldn’t.”

“I will always be wherever you need me.” He pulls me tight against his chest while I close my eyes and let myself breathe. He’s here. I can relax a little. Everything will be okay.

At least, I’m able to tell myself that much while I’m in his arms.

Finally, I have to let him in the room, and I lock the door carefully while he sets his bag on the bed. “Nice place,” he observes, gazing around the room. “I’ve always wanted to visit this area of the country, now that I think about it.
