Chapter Eight

After the photo shoot that had turned into a neighborhood event, Chloe and Jinni decided to go back to the hotel for a rest. June was glad she was left behind, because she had an agenda of her own.

It was almost enjoyable mixing with the crowd, still handing out the last of the free gifts. Girls asked for her advice on how to make their complexions clear up or make their eyes seem bigger. She got the makeup artists involved, also getting swarmed because they were ‘real professionals’, the experts on all things related to beauty. It was almost like the good old days, and she could understand why Amy had stuck it out for so long in European fashion modeling. All the attention became intoxicating.

On the short ride back to Saori’s offices, June read the note she’d been given and wondered what it meant, finally deciding it was from some sort of crank or a rival cosmetics company. She folded it again, but kept it clutched in her hand.

When she got back to Saori’s salon, stylists and artists from other advertisers were working on their models, making the salon level busy, the flowery scent of expensive cosmetics heavy in the air. As far as she could tell, the scent wasn’t from Saori products, that rival company was paying for use of the salon space that day.

Amy’s crew had returned and were preparing for the next day. June checked with Chiyo if she was needed for anything, and after having her temporary orange nails plucked off, June went for a shower. All she had to wear was a heavy terrycloth bathrobe, along with the rubber slippers she wore at Saori. When she looked for the turtleneck and shorts she’d worn at the shoot, those had been collected and taken away by a dresser, along with the cork wedges she was hoping to keep.

She found Keiko at her large styling station. Everything was neat and tidy, ready for the next day. The stylist was looking at her computer screen, slowly swiping her finger across the screen from one image to the next. She almost looked lonely, like she had nothing better to do, or anyone to do it with.

“I can’t believe how many people showed up today,” June said to announce her arrival.

Keiko looked startled when she noticed June. “You came back here? I thought you’d be out with your friends.”

“Exciting morning. I need to relax after all that.” June wondered if she was interrupting something. She had an agenda, and much of it involved getting answers from Keiko. “Good shoot today. I think they got a lot of good material for Yuto to work with.”

“Seems you…Aiko Murata is still fondly remembered in Japan,” Keiko said. She minimized the screen and turned her swivel stool to face June.

“I didn’t know she still existed,” June said with a chuckle.

“I was a schoolgirl then. The first cosmetics I bought for myself were because of your ads.”

“Really? I’m flattered. You must have spent a lot of money on those.
