“Let’s take a break.” The stars provided enough light for Jude to see the exhaustion in Annie’s eyes. Her shoulders sagged, and she no longer wanted to stand up as she attempted the transformation, but that emotional drain was the worst part to witness.

“I really wanted to make this happen,” she said pitifully, sitting down with a thump on a nearby rock. She bent forward and rested her forehead on her knees. “It seemed like a good backup plan, something that would help me run the clan if we can’t find Jordan. I don’t think it’s ever going to happen.”

“Come here.” Using his foot to move a few rocks aside and even out the ground, Jude waved her over. “You’re wiped out.”

Annie pulled herself up and staggered over without protest. He thought she might just say they should go back to the hotel and get some rest, but Jude doubted either one of them would be able to sleep. “I’ll rest, but I don’t think it’s going to help.”

Jude laid down next to her. “You’re just as stubborn as your brother, you know that?”

He heard her smirk more than he saw it. “So I’ve been told. What kind of stubbornness do you know in him?”

“Are there multiple kinds of stubborn? I wasn’t aware that they could be categorized.” He was smiling, too, so worn out from the past twenty-four hours that he wasn’t sure if even he could shift at the moment.

“Oh, sure. There’s the kind of stubborn he was when we were little kids, and he insisted he should be allowed to live in the woods by himself and hunt for his own meals.”

“Seriously? Mr. Hollywood Hotshot wanted to do that?” Jude hadn’t known Jordan until they were in their early teens, when childhood fantasies had been replaced by dreams of girls and fast cars.

“Yup. He even ran away once because he said the walls of the house were suffocating him. I guess Jordan was just super in touch with his bear then. I didn’t understand at the time. I was happy to sleep in my bed instead of out on the ground.”

“And now?” Jude was incredibly comfortable despite the hardness of the earth beneath them.

Apparently, Annie felt the same way. “With everything going on in my life, it’s kind of nice to just be. I don’t get a lot of chances to do that.”

“I’m sure it’s difficult being in charge of everyone like you are.” He couldn’t truly understand her clan life. Jude had been adopted into a clan, but wasn’t the same. Jude, Reid, and the Hoffmans didn’t live in the clubhouse or have much to do with the day-to-day operations of the members.

“When they let me be. Jude, I really appreciate you bringing me out here and helping me with this. You didn’t have to.”

Yes, he did, but he wasn’t going to say it out loud. He had to do it not because he had some sort of obligation to her that she might be offended by, but because he knew there was a deep connection between them.
