Chapter 11: Crossing the Line

The commute to school felt longer than it should have. Katherine's mind was racing with thoughts about her daughter's injury, Evan's surprising sensitivity, and the strong attraction between them that had been building for weeks. She had no idea what to make of it all. The professional walls she'd painstakingly constructed were cracking, and she wasn't sure if she was prepared for the consequences.

Evan's presence beside her while driving was both comfortable and unsettling. There was a silent tension between them, a weight in the air that neither of them recognized yet could feel. Katherine looked at him out of the corner of her eye, wondering what was on his thoughts. Was he feeling the same perplexity and pull she did, or was this just another act of compassion on his part?

When they arrived at the school, Katherine sprang out of the car, her heart thumping in her chest. Evan was immediately behind her, his long strides mirroring her urgency. They walked into the building together, both silently reflecting on how much had changed in such a short period of time.

The nurse met them at the door with a troubled gaze. "Your daughter's right this way," she remarked, bringing them down the corridor.

Katherine's stomach clenched in knots. "Is she okay?" she inquired, her voice taut with fear.

"She's resting," the nurse explained. "She damaged her wrist, but we don't believe it is broken. We basically wanted to get you here as quickly as possible."

Katherine nodded, relieved that it wasn't more serious. She followed the nurse into the little clinic room, where her daughter, Lily, sat on a cot with her wrist covered in bandages. Lily's face lightened up when she saw Katherine, but her eyes still showed anguish.

"Mom," Lily said softly, her voice shaking.

Katherine went to her side and kneeled beside her. "Hey, sweetheart, are you okay?" she inquired, softly pushing back her daughter's hair.

"I'm fine, Mom," Lily responded with a faint, comforting grin. "It's just a little sore."

Katherine gave her a short hug, relieved but concerned. "We'll have you checked out, okay? "Then we can go home and rest."

Lily nodded, and Katherine turned up to see Evan standing in the doorway, his expression impassive. He hadn't spoken anything since they arrived, but Katherine could sense he was worried—about her, about Lily. It wasn't just the act of offering to drive her here; it was the way he stood there, his concern visible in his stance, his attention fixated on her.

After a few more minutes of inspecting Lily's wrist, the nurse determined that it was not fractured but would require a brace for a few days. Katherine thanked her and helped Lily get her belongings. As they walked out of the clinic, Evan walked beside her.

"How's she holding up?" Evan inquired, his voice quiet.

Katherine looked at him, astonished by his question. "She's doing well." Just a little shook up, nothing catastrophic."

Evan nodded, glancing down at Lily, who was walking ahead of them. Katherine was taken aback by his expression, which was both sweet and genuine.
