In chapter 7, you learned that instead of an “If you get yours, I won’t get mine” attitude, which reflects our fear of loss, compromise sounds like this:

• “How do you get yours while I get mine?”

• “How do we get ours?”

• “Where are we willing to stretch to make changes in our budget that really work?

• “How are we going to make our budget work?”

This is the language of creative compromise. This is a skill that you as a couple have to learn, because without it, you won’t be able to budget successfully—not even with this practice budget.
