Chapter Seventeen

Shiloh

Inadequate.

The way I feel, summed up in a single word. I don’t like it—him knowing what I’m struggling with on top of everything else going on. The last thing I want is for Riley to feel like he needs to change just to appease my wolf ego.

I like Riley as he is. His strength doesn’t make me weak. It’s one of the things I value most about him, and being able to protect himself doesn’t mean he doesn’t need me—not really. Of course, my wolf doesn’t feel the same. Not that Riley’s strength makes us weak, just that it makes my wolf . . . obsolete.

If our mate can protect and provide for himself, what is our purpose? Do we have one? Logically—as a flesh and blood man—I know relationships don’t work like that. We’re a team. Riley’s strength is my strength. Mine is his. My wolf’s view is more black and white.

Remy barks—loud and sharp—at the alpha a step behind him, drawing my attention to my surroundings. There’s something to be said about running all out with a group of strong alphas and fast betas. The world falls away. Human problems seem smaller as I chase after Remy and his enforcers, careful not to break their line.

The betas keep turning, uncomfortable with an alpha running behind them. Some of the alphas aren’t comfortable either, which is the reason for Remy’s reprimand. I’m tempted to outpace them so they’ll stop worrying and just focus on checking the boundary. Instead, I veer away from the group and further into pack territory, so they can actually do their job.

It isn’t as fun running alone. Usually—if I’m running with my pack enforcers—we tend to whatever task we’d been sent to deal with, and then we hunt. Maybe tussle to burn off any excess energy. With Riley, it’s pretty much the same. We run side by side, my steps matching every one of his.

Now, I’m by myself with nothing to do but think. I slow, plant my paws in the grass, stretch my spine and shake out my fur before flopping into a sunny patch with a soft huff.

Nevada is drier and a lot hotter than Colorado but this close to the mountains, the weather isn’t bad. I can smell rain in the air. Tonight, it will probably storm. Maybe I’ll coax Riley out the door so we can run wild with the storm. And just maybe, I’ll stop holding back, let him see me as the alpha I am.

As his little brother, it’s never bothered me to match his strength and speed. My wolf never chafed against the status quo, not after he realized we weren’t rolling over for an omega, and by default a weaker wolf, but a brother—an equal—who would never harm us when our belly is exposed. The mate bond threw that into disarray.

Riley is still my brother but he isn’t just my brother, not anymore. He’s my headstrong omega mate. My wolf is having a hard time understanding why nothing has changed when everything has changed.
