CHAPTER THIRTEEN

Morgan stepped out of the car, her eyes narrowing as she surveyed the upscale apartment building. Beside her, Derik unfolded his tall frame from the passenger seat, scanning the scene with an equally intense focus. Police officers had caution-taped off a section of the building, and residents stood outside, talking to law enforcement with worried expressions.

"Something feels off," Morgan muttered, more to herself than to Derik, as they approached the entrance. This was the first murder that had happened in an apartment building, not a house, suggesting a possible change of MO for the killer they were tracking. Not only that, but the killer's timeline had escalated, and Morgan couldn't shake the sense of dread that settled in her gut.

"Let's find out what we're dealing with," Derik said quietly, his professional demeanor masking the tiredness that seemed to haunt him these days.

Together, they hurried over to the officers on the scene, flashing their FBI badges as they approached. One of the officers, a young man with short-cropped hair, nodded at them before speaking. "Agent Cross, Agent Greene. We got a call from a neighbor who thought she heard a scream. When we arrived, we found Ms. Lucy Harrington, here on the first floor."

"Show us," Morgan commanded, her voice steady despite the uneasy feeling inside her. Her dark hair fell across her tattooed arms as she adjusted the cuffs of her shirt—a stark reminder of the years she spent in prison, framed for a murder she didn't commit.

The officer led them through the posh lobby and down a hallway lined with plush carpeting. As they reached the door to Lucy Harrington's apartment, Morgan paused, taking a deep breath to brace herself for the sight that awaited them. The memory of the last crime scene still haunted her—the lifeless body sprawled on the floor, blood pooling around the victim's head.

"Ready?" Derik asked, his gaze flicking over to Morgan. She nodded tersely, and together they stepped inside the apartment.

Morgan's heart pounded in her chest as she stepped further into the apartment. The air was heavy with tension, yet the space itself felt strangely homey. Soft lighting illuminated the open living room, and a plush rug invited barefoot steps. A part of Morgan wished she had more time to appreciate the tasteful decor, but her gut roiled as her eyes landed on the gruesome sight before her.

Lucy Harrington lay on the floor, her head bashed in, blood staining the rug beneath her. The contrast between the violence of the scene and the surrounding warmth only heightened Morgan's sense of unease.

"Damn," Derik muttered under his breath, echoing Morgan's thoughts.

"Let's focus on the doors," she said, her voice barely a whisper, as if speaking louder would somehow disturb the victim's spirit. Her dark eyes scanned the room, zeroing in on the entrance points.

"Good idea," Derik agreed. Together, they moved towards the front door that led into the hallway, Morgan's expert gaze scrutinizing the lock. It seemed undisturbed, but she knew better than to trust appearances alone.
