CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Tamara was waiting for them as they entered the ops room. Tom said hello and Kerry crossed the room to her desk. Cassie was making notes on a white board, occasionally glancing down at her notebook, diligently writing up the details. She smiled at Tom but didn’t speak.

“Where’s Eric?” Tamara asked.

Just as she spoke, Eric hurried into the room, his mobile firmly pressed against his ear. He was on the phone with Becca, she could tell. Eric always lowered his voice when he was speaking to her, seemingly burying the mobile into his face almost as if he was trying not to be seen. Whereas, when he was on police business everyone could hear his voice carry throughout the room.

“I know, I know,” Eric said, his eyes nervously glancing at her as he walked to his desk, each step taking longer as he slowed down. “I have to g—” he looked pained. “I… I have to go.”

He hung up and hurriedly put the phone in his pocket, apologising to Tamara with a weak smile.

She smiled back. “Is everything okay, Eric?”

“Yeah, yeah… no problem,” he said, slumping into his chair and spinning it to face the front of the room. She wasn’t convinced, but she didn’t press the issue.

Tamara looked around the room. Everyone was waiting expectantly for the afternoon briefing, all apart from Cassie who was still writing. Tamara drew a deep breath. “Right, Cassie’s all but finished, so we’ll make a start in the meantime.” She looked at Tom. “How did it go with Natasha Crowe?”

“Very well,” Tom said. “She was pretty candid around her extramarital relationship – with Mark Stannard – a local golfer who works freelance as a coach alongside playing professional tournaments. We had the evidence, so it was undeniable, but in my opinion, she didn’t withhold or try to minimise it. In her view it was a convenience relationship; he satisfied the needs that Henry wasn’t interested in doing.”

“Sexual?”

“Looks that way. She was emphatic that being married to Henry wasn’t an issue for her and she wasn’t entertaining the notion of leaving him, for Stannard or anyone else.”

“You believe her?” Tamara asked.

He shrugged. “Until she gives me reason not to, yes.”

Cassie had finished up transcribing her notes onto the board and took her seat. “Why would she have need to kill him? I told you, she just has to wait it out. Bumping him off is a risky option, high reward but massive downside if she gets caught. Far simpler to play the long con.”

Tamara raised her eyebrows. Cassie had a point. “But not everyone is as patient as you, Cassie. Some people want it all, and they want it now.”

“Oh, I don’t disagree. If it was me, I’d have done him in already.”

“Good to know where your head’s at, DS Knight,” Tom said. Cassie winked at him. “She pointed us to where we could find her lover. He made for an interesting chat.” Tamara inclined her head, keen to hear more. “When we called at his house, he took off like a hare out the back.
