Essentially, applied research at a local level tends to be concerned with finding out: the extent of food insecurity in a given area; identifying actions (interventions) that could help; and then assessing if those interventions work. As previously discussed, such endeavours are often necessarily pragmatic and reactive undertakings because the main drivers of food insecurity are national level policies and trends that are outside of the control of the local actors who are tasked with responding to it. Local-level research, therefore, has two main areas of concern (Table 4.1):
