Set in a Grade I listed building originally designed to be a hotel, the Holburne Museum is one of Bathâs top attractions. This museum houses an impressive collection of fine paintings and artworks from some of the worldâs leading artists.
The upstairs floor is dedicated to the 18th century, showcasing porcelain, sculpture, paintings, and silverware. The former ballroom amazes visitors each time, with a crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling, with real silverware and porcelain glittering beneath its light as paintings of 18th century people gaze upon modern visitors.
Another room is dedicated to the collections amassed by Sir William Holburne, fifth Baronet (1793 â 1874), who had an eclectic taste in art. Over the years, he collected around 4,000 artworks and books including Chinese porcelain, Renaissance bronzes, portrait miniatures, Roman glass and much more, all donated by his sister following his death.
The top floor is dedicated to the Golden Age of British art which includes pieces by William Hoare (1707 â 1792) and Thomas Gainsborough (1727 â 1788) who both lived in Bath which influenced their work. Other notable artists to have their works hung beside theirs include George Stubbs, Allan Ramsay, and Johann Zoffany.
Throughout the year, the museum hosts several temporary exhibitions, workshops, lectures, family events, and musical performances.
