Beaches

The beaches along Egypt’s Mediterranean coast differ greatly in character from those along the Red Sea and in the Sinai. Waves can be strong and persistent in fall, winter, and spring, helped by stiff offshore prevailing breezes. This wave action and water movement affects underwater visibility, making diving less enjoyable here than in the Red Sea.The beaches along the Corniche in Alexandria are narrow but composed of fine sand. Many are formed from shallow coves interspersed with rocky outlets. The character of the public beaches in the city is much less cosmopolitan than at, say, Sharm El-Sheikh or Hurghada, and they are frequented far more by local and Cairene families than international visitors. For this reason you should dress modestly (no skimpy bikinis), though the atmosphere is not oppressive. On hotel beaches, such as at the Four Seasons, there is no problem with beachwear, and you will be able to sunbathe without attention.
