Bodega Escorihuela.

The closest winery to the city—and the oldest working one in the province—is Bodega Escorihuela. Located in Godoy Cruz (about a 15-minute cab ride from Mendoza center), it was founded in 1884 by Spaniard Miguel Escorihuela Gascón and purchased in 1993 by a group of investors led by pioneer vintner Nicolás Catena. Today it includes the handsomely refurbished shell of the old winery as well as modern buildings. Museo de Ciencias Naturales (Museum of Natural Sciences).

At this writing, Museo de Ciencias Naturales is closed for renovation; however, it is expected to reopen by early 2015, enabling visitors to again peruse its interesting collection devoted to anthropology, mineralogy, paleontology, archaeology, and zoology. | Parque General San Martin, at Av. de las Tipas and Av. de Circunvalacion | 261/428–7666 | 2 pesos | Weekdays 8–1 and 2–7, weekends 3–7.

Museo del Area Fundacional (Foundational Museum).

On the site of the original cabildo (town hall), the Foundation Museum explains the region’s social and historical development. Of note is the display of a mummified child found on Aconcagua, with photos of his burial treasures. Museo del Pasado Cuyano (Museum of Cuyo’s Past).

Home of former governor and senator Emilio Civit, this 26-bedroom 1873 mansion was the gathering place of the Belle Époque elite. Today it’s the Museum of the Cuyo’s Past. Exhibits include paintings, antiques, and weaponry used in Argentina’s War of Independence. Museo Histórico de San Martín (San Martin Historical Museum).
