Peaceable Kingdom

The wolf did with lambkin dwell in peace

His grim carnivorous nature there did cease

………………………………………….

When the great PENN his famous treaty made

With Indian chief beneath the Elm-tree’s shade.

—Edward Hicks, written on the margins of his painting Peaceable Kingdom

Too much quiet makes you start thinking. The vague sadness

that’s always there begins to attach itself to things.

The lion turns to gaze directly into your eyes.

You try not to shut down, but the floodlight is on you,

turning on you from the wilderness of your own heart.

It has always been like this: pieties and accusations.

You can’t see what else. There is only a tableau of creatures,

stilled as if to give notice of what they potentially contain.

Teeth, claws, horns. As if there were a flood of immigrants

to be held at the border, the eyes of the children wide

with despair, and you holding up your treaty, to show there’s no

use thinking anymore, in the face of such inviolable words.
