‘It’s an old one,’ he said. ‘The sim card is in my name. I got a new one a month ago, and haven’t disconnected this one.’

‘I don’t know how good the reception is where I’m staying,’ said Amber.

‘Well, just if you want to send me a message or something, find somewhere with some signal I guess,’ said Justin.

‘I will. Thank you.’

Another awkward silence fell, but this one was warmer than the first.

‘I better get back inside,’ Justin said. ‘My parents will wonder where I am, and I can’t really tell them about you. I tried to lie about how my hand got hurt, but they heard about what happened.’

Another wave of guilt swept through Amber, and it showed on her face. Justin immediately said, ‘Oh, sorry, I didn’t mean … I was just explaining why I can’t invite you in.’
