I open my trunk to stow

whatever’s not yet soaked.

I’ll head home and help Pa

move Ma’s sewing table

before I check

on Maggie and her mother.

I could give her the ring

at her house today,

but the rain’s so heavy

and loud,

all my loving words

would be washed away.

Pa asked me to help

roll some rags

and stuff them

under the front door

so the rising water

doesn’t seep inside,

but now I’m back

at the window.

Best get your writing

done now,

Pa said.

By the time

this rain stops,

we’ll have a

slopping mess

to clean up.
