Chapter Eleven

Sunday morning dawned into another beautiful, frosty day, and I decided that fall was my favourite time of year. There weren’t any bugs, the awful heatwave had grudgingly gone away, and the sun still shone brightly every single day.

Casey stayed in her borrowed room and refused to come down and take part in the impromptu going away breakfast Aunt Lillian threw for Olive, or to come and talk to her dad.

After breakfast, Olive bounced excitedly up the stairs to say goodbye to her sister, and when she came down she had tears in her eyes.

“I’m going to miss Casey,” she said tearfully. “I wish she was coming with me, Dad. I think she’s sad.”

He ruffled her hair. “She needs to stay here and keep an eye on things. Your brothers would get into way too much trouble without her watching over them.”

We all went down to the barn to help load Salsa and send them off on their big adventure.

“Right, well, I’m headed back to the house; come back when you’re ready for lunch, Astrid,” Aunt Lillian said.

Kade and Justin both tacked up their first horses to ride, and I started grooming Doc so Justin could ride him next. After a few minutes, Casey came slinking into the barn looking pale with dark circles under both eyes.

“Hi,” I said, “are you feeling better?”

“No,” she whispered in a broken voice, “my life is awful.”

I didn’t bother answering that; just ignored her and kept brushing Doc.

She didn’t offer to help me groom and tack up Justin’s horses, even though it would have made our progress that much faster. And she didn’t help Kade, either. She just sat on the tack trunk across from Kitty’s stall and stared moodily down at the ground.

When Kade came back in from the ring, he shot her an irritated look. “Would you stop looking so depressed, Casey. You acted like you could hardly stand Dad and Ollie when they were around. What’s the problem now?”

“I don’t know,” she said, hugging her knees to her chest. “Everything’s messed up.”

“Well, pull yourself together, woman. Come on, saddle up Kitty. We’re out of here. You, too, Astrid. I know you’ve been working with that ridiculous beast, so no excuses.”

“He’s not ridiculous,” I protested just as Justin led Badger back in from the ring. “Is he, Justin? He’s a wonderful horse, right?”

“Worst ranch horse ever,” he said, winking at me to show he was just kidding. “Come on, Kade’s right. You kids get those horses saddled. Time for a trail ride. Winter’s coming soon, and we won’t be able to do this much longer.”

“I suppose so.” Casey pulled herself wearily to her feet as if trail riding was the worst chore ever handed to her, and I quickly moved to Red’s stall to get him brushed.

I noticed from the corner of my eye that Casey didn’t have any trouble tacking up her own mare; even though she was shorter than me and rail-thin, she swung the heavy saddle up on Kitty’s back like it was nothing.
