“It could fit better, but this will do.” I glanced down at the body of the vampire whose wardrobe I’d raided after tearing his head from his shoulders. He was a relative newcomer to the tribe, I recalled, one I’d never particularly enjoyed. He’d certainly outfitted himself well in the short time Augustine had been paying his bills.

The silver button-down was a bit tight around my chest and biceps, and the jeans could’ve been a bit longer, but the alternative was wandering the manse in blood-stained pants and a bare torso. Not precisely the way to blend in. Granted, I’d never blended in to begin with, but I might manage to avoid notice among so many party-crazed vampires.

They would be slow now, sluggish, having danced and fed and fucked themselves silly for hours and even days. That was one of Augustine’s little tricks. Giving them what they thought they wanted, lulling them into sluggishness so they could pose no threat to him or his will.

“Are you finished? We have to find her, and you’re preening in front of a mirror.” Dominic rolled his eyes, the imperious shit. This was the most time I’d spent with him all at once in a decade and I’d already had my fill.

“Do you think he’ll be missed?” Kristoff nudged the dead vampire’s leg with one foot.

“I doubt it. There are too many here.” I looked them over, noting the clothing they’d chosen for themselves. I’d pointed out the fact that they had roughly the same chance of blending in as I did, dressed as they’d been in their preppy street clothes. Kristoff wore a pair of tight jeans, a skillfully torn t-shirt. Dominic had chosen suit pants, a tailored shirt.

“Would you loosen up, for fuck’s sake?” I unbuttoned the shirt until it was half-open, ignoring how he attempted to push my hands away. “You’re supposed to be partying, not attending a board meeting.”

“Let’s go. We’re running out of time.” Kristoff slung his bag across his chest. “We need to find Sophie, remember? Have your arguments later.”

We were in the west wing of the manse, where the rooms were laid out much like an apartment building. It brought to mind my penthouse and how I would never see it again now that the location had been discovered. Good thing I rarely if ever attached value to possessions. Only the fact that Sophie had once been there made it even slightly important.

The halls were quiet when we emerged from the dead vampire’s former chambers. Partying took place in the east wing, farthest from Augustine’s suite. I could hear the music and a tangle of voices, louder with every step we took.

Now that we were here and stalking the halls, the fact of our having no concrete plan was painfully evident. Find Sophie. Get out of here. That was as far as we’d gone in terms of planning.

We could hardly murder our way through the manse, as we’d killed the vampire who’d had the misfortune of returning to his chambers while we were in the process of raiding his closet.
