Eighteen

The grave-borne monstrosity staggered toward them, supporting its bulk on three legs the girth of tree trunks. Ash covered her mouth and nose and almost gagged at the fetid stench.

“How did all of this even happen?”

“Clinton Tha Bard’s performance happened.” Ember took a reflexive step back as the monster drew closer. “I’ll explain later. I tried to stop it, but I wasn’t fast enough.”

The gestalt zombie thumped closer. Ember estimated its central mass to be about as big around as her two-story house, and nearly as tall. The mouth took up half its mass and opened wide enough to fit a team of horses inside its fetid grasp.

She felt her blood run cold as its maw cracked open and let out a howl of hunger and rage, flecks of revolting slobber flying out to spatter the park commons.

Ember glanced over at Tyrone. “You’re the fastest. Can you make sure there are no mundanes left in the park?”

“Can do, Witchy Poo. Back in a flash—no pun intended.”

Tyrone turned into a blur, flashing through the half light of the stormy skies. Ember looked over to Ash. “Any ideas of how to stop this thing?”

“Why don’t we blow it up or something? That usually works.”

“With what?”

“Skyfire?”

“I used that spell once, already. This rainstorm is the result. Every time you use it—”

“I know, I know, it makes the storm worse.” Ash’s eyes got a wild light in them.

“Ash, no.”

“No, what?”

“No to whatever crazy thing it is that you’re thinking of doing.”

Ash winked. “Who, me? Crazy? Perish the thought. I’m going to lead it away from you until you have a chance to recover—and hopefully come up with a better plan.”

“Ash, wait!”

It was too late. Ash bounded across the park commons, hurling another of her light-based javelins at the monster. The spear sluiced into the mound of rotting flesh and splintered bone to the hilt. She tossed another spear after the first, passing in front of the monster by less than ten feet.

“Here I am, want some brains?” Ash taunted as she raced past. The gestalt zombie’s maw cracked open again and unleashed a bellow that split the air. Ember clasped her hands over her ears and winced at the dissonant screech.

“She won’t be able to keep it busy for long,” Ember said. “Any ideas?”

A golden furred form flashed toward them, and Ember breathed a sigh of relief. Cedric’s wolf form was a welcome sight. He morphed into his human shape mid-run, jogging up to Ember on two legs.

“What’s the situation?”

“Ash is using herself as bait to lure a flesh-hungry monster away from the good townsfolk,” Kali said.

Cedric’s eyes went wide as he beheld the zombie mound as it pursued Ash on its thick, stump like legs. “I take it that’s the monster?”

“Yes. Any ideas?”

Cedric pursed his lips and shook his head. “I was about to ask you the same thing.”

Tyrone dashed up to their side, the mummy Pharoah Hori a few steps behind. “The park is clear of civilians, Witchy Poo.”

“Thank you, Tyrone. Nice work.
