Chapter Seven

LIAM WOKE to a pounding headache. He felt as though the ceiling had collapsed on him. He cracked open his eyelids slowly, hesitant to let the morning sun in. He turned to the side, hoping that a change in position would alleviate some of the pressure building at his temples, but when he moved, he realized his head was pillowed by something soft and warm.

It took him a moment to remember what had happened. It came back to him in fractured pieces, the benefit, the bartender, and Trey. He’d kissed Trey. And Trey had kissed him back. Here. In his apartment.

His eyes flew open then to stare at the man he was nestled with in bed. Trey looked back at him, his eyes wary. Liam scrambled up, and instantly regretted it. His hand flew to the side of his head as he tried to steady himself. How much had he actually had to drink? Bits of the evening were missing. He remembered the cab ride home—oh God, the cab ride where he’d tried repeatedly to molest Trey.

“Are you okay?” Trey asked, his voice laced with concern.

Liam rubbed at his face with his hand, and then carefully sat up a little, perching on the edge of the bed. His fingers connected with the tiny scar, barely visible, near his hairline. It had been spring and Liam had gotten the bright idea to try out for the lacrosse team. He’d bought his stick and other equipment and headed out onto the field, sure he could make the team. He’d ended up needing seven stitches and developed green bruises that made him look like Frankenstein’s monster.

“I don’t know why you went out for the lacrosse team anyhow,” Trey had said. “You’ve got to protect your hands, idiot.”

Liam had only shrugged. He couldn’t admit how badly he’d wanted to fit in, something that came so naturally to Trey. After he’d gotten clobbered with the lacrosse stick at tryouts, Trey had been the one, not his teammates, to come down from the bleachers, wrap an arm around him, and take him to the nurse’s office.

Trey had always been his protector, right up until he’d left.

Liam closed his eyes for a moment and tried to gather his thoughts. He was out of his element and didn’t know what to do. On the one hand, this was Trey. The boy who’d been his everything for so long, the person who he’d looked up to, whom he’d loved, for so many years. But this was the same person who had destroyed his heart and left him broken and alone, too. Something about that day hadn’t sat right with Liam for years. He knew there was something Trey hadn’t told him, but the hurt and the betrayal had outweighed the concern, and eventually Liam had forced himself to close off the part of him that still loved Trey.

It had been easier that way, to just ignore the ache that lived permanently inside him. He’d done so well at it, up until now.
