On his way out of the cemetery, Grady stopped a groundskeeper who was driving a tractor, leaning out of his SUV to yell at the man who tried to ignore him, the vibration of the engine too loud to talk over until he cut the engine. “Hey! I just buried my mom and now her gravesite’s been vandalized. Dug up, spray-painted.”

The groundskeeper, an older man wearing a dingy yellow baseball hat, a T-shirt, and a ratty pair of jeans shrugged. “You probably have to call the office or the police about it.”

Grady narrowed his eyes, holding up his badge. “I am the police.”

The man shrugged again, seemingly unaffected by Grady’s position with the department. “What do you want me to do about it?”

Fighting the urge to jump out of his SUV, pull the man off of his tractor and throw him to the ground, Grady growled, “Fix it.”

It had to be with him. The surest path to getting his anger under control was to solve the case in front of him.

Pushing his thoughts aside, Grady focused on the facts of the case as he pulled into the parking lot across the street from police headquarters and got out of his car, running what they knew over and over again in his mind, trying to ignore what he’d seen at the cemetery. People were awful, he thought. He was sure Cassie would have some answer for him, something that showed the redemptive nature of humans. Grady curled his lip. Focusing on the facts didn’t do much for his mood except to keep him from tumbling down into an endless pit of anger.

He stopped at the catering kiosk in the lobby, bought two coffees, and took them upstairs, nearly scalding his hands on the steaming hot paper cups. Striding out of the elevator, he set one down on Reynolds’s desk and took the other one to his. Cassie emerged a minute later from the other side of the office, wearing a black suit with a light blue blouse underneath. If
