Chapter 14

A few minutes after eleven o’clock, Cassie pulled her SUV into a parking spot along the street near Bubba’s Bait Shop. A few boats bobbed along the public dock, no doubt belonging to tournament fishermen topping up their lure supplies before heading out for another round of fishing.

She grabbed her sunglasses from the dashboard and put them on, reducing the glare of the sun on the sparkling water. Tourists, and likely a lot of fishermen’s wives, walked along the waterfront, enjoying the beautiful weather.

Many of them had already wandered through Olde Crow Primitives that morning, but the store would remain busy all day. Cassie felt bad for stepping out again. Thankfully, Grams had offered to help Maggie for a few hours, but it wasn’t the same as being there herself. She enjoyed serving the tourists who came through.

But right now, Anna needed her more. A visit with Zach would do the girl some good. Since Banford didn’t have its own jail, Zach had been placed in a cell at the county provincial police station, twenty minutes up the highway. Anna didn’t have her licence, and Cassie didn’t think she should visit by herself, anyway.

As Cassie turned on the sidewalk to Bubba’s, Anna walked out the front door. A backpack purse hung from her shoulder. She waved when she saw Cassie.

“I was watching for you.” Anna caught up to Cassie.

“It’s okay for you to leave? Bubba’s not too busy in there?”

“He’ll be fine for a bit. He wants me to see Zach.” Anna forced a smile.

They climbed in the vehicle, and Cassie pulled out onto the street, around a big truck and boat trailer. “Have you been able to talk to him at all?”

Anna shook her head. “Not really. Just one quick phone call last night.”

“How is he doing?” Cassie pushed her sunglasses into her hair and put the car visor down instead.

“He’s scared. He keeps trying to explain what happened, but no one will listen to him.” Anna sniffed. “And now I’ve made it worse by lying! When they find out, it’ll make him look even more guilty.” She turned to look out the window as they drove out of town and onto the quiet, two-lane highway.

Cassie patted Anna’s leg a couple of times but struggled for something to say. Anna wasn’t a believer in God, so a Bible verse or a quote about faith probably wouldn’t do anything for her. She said a silent prayer for her friend instead, asking God to comfort Anna and to make His presence known in this situation. She also prayed for the real murderer to be brought to justice so the whole mess would go away.

“Are you really trying to find the killer?” Anna fiddled with the zipper of the backpack purse between her feet.

“Yes. But I’m afraid I haven’t gotten very far.” Cassie wished there was something she could tell Anna to offer hope.

“Do you have any suspects?”

Judd immediately popped into Cassie’s mind. “Yes. But I don’t know if it’s going to pan out, so I don’t really want to say who it is.
