Chapter 11

As their weight hit the door, it opened!

The guards realized that Drew's warning had been a diversionary trick.

Drew and Ben tumbled outside onto the dock.

Bullets whizzed down the hallway in their direction. They pierced the archive boxes and pinged off the cement walls. Some lodged in the metal door.

From his position lying on the dock, Drew swung around and slammed the door shut with his legs. The sound of bullets hitting the door continued. They could actually see the metal bulging on the outside in various spots from the continuous impacts.

Ben swiveled his head around the empty docks. "We've probably got a second to decide before they come bursting through the door. Which direction?"

"Does it matter? We'll never outrun those guns out here in the open."

"Can you swim?" the vampire asked.

"Do I have a choice?"

"Now!" Ben yelled as the guards clamored through the door.

The commander heard the splash. He thought sure the vampire and rogue agent had thrown something in the water to distract him and his men. He flashed his light in several directions on the deserted docks. It took him a second to believe the fugitives had actually dove into the river!

"They're in the water. Fire at will!" he commanded.

All the guards lined up along the edge of the dock. Their laser sights pierced the dark waters. A moment later, the surface of the water broke up with dozens of mini-splashes as the bullets flew towards the escapees.

Underwater, Drew and Ben swam as fast as they could. The bullets looked like tiny rockets as they shot by the swimmers. One barely missed Ben's face by half an inch and another came dangerously close to his inner thigh.

Since the guards were firing blindly into the murky water, predicting the trajectory of the next bullet was impossible for the two men swimming for their lives. They could only keep swimming and hope they could make it out of range before they had to surface for air.

The bullet that hit Drew's leg severely hindered that plan!

Ben soon realized that Drew had fallen behind. He glanced over his shoulder and saw the young man twist with pain. Worse, he saw him start to surface. Ben knew that if Drew's head popped out of the water, the guards would have a clear shot at it!

Putting himself in more danger, Ben turned around and swam back toward Drew. He pulled Drew down by the pants legs.

Drew struggled trying to kick himself free as his lungs felt like they were going to burst because he'd already stayed underwater too long.

Ben knew what he had to do. The vampire grabbed a handful of Drew's hair to hold his head in place. With his other hand he pinched Drew's nose. Then Ben propelled his own head through the water and lip-locked with Drew forming an airtight seal.

The vampire forced air from his own body into Drew's lungs. He then inhaled deeply. He felt Drew's chest moving in and out. Ben repeated the breathing exercise several times
