Family Deinopidae.

Afrikaans name: Netgooispinnekop.

Average size: 12–30mm.

Identification: Stick-like in appearance, with long body and very long legs. Female slightly larger than male, and has asymmetrical hump on abdomenG. Coloration resembles tree bark.

Habitat: Built-up areas and forests; trees, bushes, low vegetation, grass. Occasionally seen on windowsills in houses.

Habits: NocturnalG; rests on tree branch during day. Waits on grass stems or twigs near ground, holding web which it bodily throws over prey.

Notes: There are three southern African species in the genus.

Venom: Harmless to man.

Web: Scaffold web in which spider waits with rectangular, expandable cribellateG web (net) to capture prey passing below it.

Food: Insects, including cockroaches and moths.

Other genera: Ogre-faced Spiders (Deinopis).

Similar species: Other spiders in family Deinopidae.
