Somewhere in the Mountains

The Cairo (CTL-9)

The cargo transport lander Cairo under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Mark Janssen had departed Southport for an early morning flight to New Cancun and had inadvertently flown directly over an alien invasion fleet of seagoing ships carrying thousands of alien warriors headed for the southern coast near Southport. The two senior logistics officers for the colony, Commander Rick Cassidy and Gunnery Sergeant Molly Pickford had been aboard to escort a major shipment of weapons, ammunition and other Ranger supplies from New Hope Town to New Cancun after a stop in Southport. Also onboard was a three-man Ranger medical team led by Major Maya Scott, and a group from the New Hope Academy including fifty female students and interns along with eleven adult staff members. The school’s Russian Assistant Director of Student Travel and Transportation Veronika Tchachenko.

Plasma bolts fired at Cairo by energy cannon mounted on the alien ships damaged much of its anti-grav plant and killed its co-pilot Major Vlad Brokovich. Before it disappeared off Southport’s radar screens the transport’s communications tech Corporal Miruku Nakamura was able to send a brief warning including a few seconds of video before the planet’s communications satellites were disabled cutting all communications between the settlements and any aircraft not on the ground or in the air near one of the colony’s settlements or outposts.

Warned by Cairo’s emergency call the Rangers stationed in Southport met the aliens at the shore and fought a desperate delaying action while some 6,000 civilians were evacuated by the transport Barcelona. The warning was also heard in New Cancun giving them time to spot the second invasion force that was headed there.

Rick Cassidy and Molly Pickford had known each other for over four and a half years and were best friends, partners in many endeavors not the least of which was survival, and they’d been frequent lovers before her marriage to Australian Lieutenant Jason Ramsey eight months earlier. In previous lives they had been Lieutenant Paul O’Brien and Staff Sergeant Susan Bennett but they had had to flee to the colony under new identities to escape the kill teams sent out by the two surviving Gul brothers, dangerous terrorists who wanted their heads for killing their father and four brothers a few months before during some incidents in Africa.

Neither knew when they departed from Southport that Rick’s daughter Ciara was on her way to the colony onboard the cargo supply ship Asia. The Asia was also carrying more than four new Colonial Ranger detachments to the colony but they were still two months from arriving at the colony. Cassidy and Pickford were also unaware that Rick’s sister Bridget O’Brien, who was now a lieutenant in Colonial Security, Ranger Command’s law enforcement and security division, was also already headed to the colony. She and 2,300 Rangers were aboard the huge colony transport ship Marco Polo. To top things off Rick’s other sisters, Nicole and Chloe, were preparing to embark on the cargo supply ship Australia for the six-month voyage to New Hope.
